Scott Lape, Safety Manager at Upside Innovations, has a wealth of experience in safety, with a history that spans across general industry and construction.

Upside Innovations provides complete solutions for handicap ramps, stairs, and canopies. “I am responsible for implementation and compliance of the Safety and Health Policy for our company and I’m accountable for results as measured by criteria, such as incident rates,” Scott tells us.

In both his personal and professional life, Scott is someone who is always looking for opportunities to support safety. Whether it be improving conditions, reducing risk, developing safety programs, or enforcing practices and policies, he’s dedicated to safety and health.

How did you end up doing what you do now?

I began working in the installations sector of our company. While driving the installations division to growth and success, there was an obvious need for me to understand safety regulations and requirements to be able to help our employees resolve safety concerns on a day to day basis.

I began to forefront the safety portion of our company on several different levels. I became heavily involved in both the construction industry and general industry of manufacturing; as well as The Department of Transportation’s regulations and requirements to maintain the safety of our drivers. When it became identified that we needed someone to step into a full time safety position for our company, I willingly stepped in to fill the role.

What’s the best piece of advice you have been given and who gave it to you?

One of the most important pieces of advice that I have received is to always strive to maintain the best integrity as possible.

Doing the right thing when others are watching is great. But doing the right thing, even when you think no one is looking, or when everyone else is completely against it is what makes the greatest impact. Integrity is essential to set the correct example through your actions, and not just through words.

What’s your advice for someone who leads safety in their business?

Stay positive and continue to strive for the safest workplace possible. While leading safety, we can face many obstacles and setbacks. These difficulties can take their toll sometimes; but remembering why safety is important and doing our best to protect every worker from injuries and illnesses allows each of them to go home and enjoy life with the people they love and enjoy the things they love to do. This helps me continue to drive and lead safety every day.

How do you see safety changing in the future?

I see the safety mindset changing to become more positive. Safety is not about following rules or regulations because we have to, or that these standards are set to hold us back.

Safety is about protecting each and every worker everywhere, that every person has value, and every person needs to be cared for, protected, and valued.
