Can you guess OSHA’s number one, most-cited violation for 2018?

If you guessed fall protection, you’re right! More than 7,200 violations occurred related to fall protection—that is, the general requirements standard.

Patrick Kapust, the deputy director of OSHA’s Directorate of Enforcement Programs, recently presented the preliminary findings at the National Safety Council Congress and Expo in Houston, Texas (1).

The top 5 violations are actually the same for the fourth year in a row.

The list of the top 10  most frequently cited OSHA violations is a great reminder of where so many organizations can improve! These are hazards that we know we can eliminate or minimize, so they are a great place to focus.

Here’s the preliminary top 10 list from OSHA:

  1. Fall Protection (general requirements standard)
  2. Hazard communication
  3. Scaffolding
  4. Respiratory protection
  5. Lockout/Tagout
  6. Ladders
  7. Powered industrial trucks
  8. Fall Protection – Training requirements
  9. Machine guarding
  10. Eye and face protection

The newcomer on the list this year: eye and face protection.
